the journey begins!

Yep, we just signed the contract to begin the construction of our home! We are so excited and a little nervous at the same time. We know there will be many ups and downs as we go through the process, but just the fact that we are beginning is a step in the right direction.

When we moved here to Texas in November of 2011 we had no idea what the future would hold.  We had just come out of a difficult time financially and didn't know how long it would be until we would be in the position to purchase a home again. Add to that my job loss at the end of 2012 and things weren't looking too promising. Thankfully Papawizzy and I were able to find jobs and last April we purchased the lot above.

I never realized how much goes into building a house. The first step (after purchasing the land, of course) was finding a contractor. We interviewed several and found one who wasn't going to look down his nose at us because we weren't building a mansion. You know what they say about Texas - everything's bigger - well we didn't want to build a mansion. We need to be able to live comfortably in retirement in this home, so we can't build with the expectation of increased income, as we tend to do when we are young- well maybe I'm the only one who did that! We aren't building this house with the expectation of growing into it, but of using it and having it be a place where we can enjoy ourselves and our family and friends over the years.

After we hired a contractor and had our plans drawn, we needed to find financing. This to date has been the most difficult.  Before the financial issues of 2011 we had excellent credit and getting a mortgage was never a problem, but this time around it was a little bit of a struggle to find someone who trusted our credit worthiness. Thankfully that is behind us.

Now all that remains is watching the home get built.  We will watch it take form with joy and thankfulness to the Lord for all he has done.  And for His guidance through each step of he process. I say this because at one point Papawizzy and I had decided that since it was going to take at least another year to get financing, we would buy an RV and do some traveling.  If we had done that, we may have ruined our chances of building for several years to come.

As many of you know, I have been a frustrated country girl for many years, so to be able to purchase a piece of land that will allow me to do a little of that country living was a dream come true! Not too sure it's a dream for Papawizzy, but he is coming along for the ride :). I will have enough room for my garden and chickens and maybe a few more exciting adventures. I'll keep you posted as we go along.
