Jury duty

Day 2 - don't we just love it when that jury summons comes in the mail. It's never convenient that's for sure! So we come down to the courthouse mulling around in our minds which excuse we think will get us out. Of course I tried the financial hardship excuse, but even though my employer doesn't pay me while I'm on jury duty, the Judge didn't think I had a hardship. Then I hoped my relationship with people in law enforcement would suffice, but nope!

So here I am -day 2 of what's slated to be about a 20 day trial! Did I think that my life was more important then other people's? I had a number of people give me suggestions of how go get out of it - you know things like telling the judge that all people who are arrested are guilty or that I'm prejudiced against a certain race. Well I couldn't do it.

I hadn't thought too much about it before, but being a juror is kinda important. I mean the fate of an individual rests in my hands! I know we don't have a perfect system, but at least we live in a country where we are innocent until proven guilty! The government does not have the right to just throw us in jail and take the word of the police or person in authority. Our guilt must be proven -beyond a shadow of a doubt.

So here I sit waiting to go back into the courtroom. Ready to do my civic duty as an American and proud of it!
