Well, here we go . . .

Well, not quite yet. But, we are getting everything together for Papawizzy and I to spend a year on the road! We plan to see as much of the U.S. as possible over the next year.

It is a very daunting and involved process to get everything ready! We are renting out our house, putting things in storage, selling our vehicles, and buying a RV! That sounds pretty easy and straightforward when I just type it, but oh what a process!! First, renting out our house! That's a big thing. Any of you who have followed my blog know how much we have loved our house and building our homestead. Having our house built, building our chicken coop, planting our garden and then putting in our pool with a great outdoor entertainment space. We love it here! So therefore we decided to rent it out rather then selling it. We want to come back!

Next is the process of buying a RV. Well until we got into it we didn't realize how many choices and decisions there are to make. Do we want a motorhome (that could be a class A, B or C), or do we want a truck and trailer (that could be a travel trailer or a fifth wheel)? And then the decision to go with gas or diesel? I suppose if we had unlimited funds it might be a little easier lol!

So, we started with the thought that we'd get a small class C motorhome. This type of motorhome is a little like a truck in the front with a living area attached. I liked this option because I was intimidated with the idea of driving a Class A, which is more like a bus. Papawizzy was more interested in a Class A because of the space. With these two options it would be necessary to tow a car behind so we would be able to park the motorhome and go on excursions or to the store. It's a bit of work to "break camp" just to go to the store :). Both of these options are fairly pricey even though we would looking at used ones. We didn't really consider the class B because they are really van conversions and also very expensive. A class B also wouldn't accommodate other people - like grandkids! I also liked the idea of the motorhome because you have the freedom to do things in the motorhome while driving - like going to the bathroom, getting a snack or taking a nap!

The next option would be the truck and trailer. This in most cases is a less expensive way to go and when we are done traveling we still have a truck to drive. But do we go with a travel trailer or a fifth wheel? Usually trailer trailers are less expensive and lighter, but fifth wheels give you more living space and the length of your total rig (truck and trailer) can be shorter because some of the trailer rides over the bed of the truck. We started looking at doing the truck and trailer option with our current truck which is a Ram 1500, but we felt that would limit what type of trailer we could pull especially since our truck was a gas model. With that in mind we came to one decision - whatever we get we want to get it with a diesel engine.

We were making ourselves crazy trying to figure out what to do! We were vacillating between class A, class C, truck and trailer, and scrapping the whole idea!!! We took a deep breath and talked about it and decided that, yes we do want to do this, so what is the best option? We got lots of advice from people who have done this, watched lots of youtube videos and finally decided that the best choice for us would be a . . .  TRUCK AND FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER!!!

So now we have the truck and we need to purchase our fifth wheel, but we feel like we've made a lot of progress! We are excited and scared to death, but we are looking forward to getting on the road and seeing the United States of America!!

Blessings,
Mamawizzy
